John Lyon's Charity and the City Parochial Foundation funded and developed the Young Men's Initiative over a three-year period, as an innovative response to a range of issues facing minority ethnic men aged 18-30. The initiative was designed as two projects, developed in consultation with local community groups: one was based at the Refugee Advice and Support Centre in Hammersmith and the other at the Bengali Workers' Association centre in Camden.
A recurring dilemma faced by independent foundations is how to promote the positive messages from projects that we support and sometimes initiate, so that they make a difference in the wider community. In 2005 the Charity, in partnership with the City Parochial Foundation, launched Touching the Margins, the report of the Young Men's Initiative. The report was based on research conducted by the Policy Studies Institute and the publication and launch was organised by the National Institute for Adult and Continuing Education (NIACE).
